 The End of a Day

It was the end of a day. A large shape lay curled apon the Greenblade Meadow, panting quietly in the slight spring heat, a sudden change in the temperature having occurred after the harsh winter. The shape was brown and white in colour, a strange combination but going well on the figure. His summer coat was beginning to show, the finer, coarser hair coming out from under the sleek, warm and fluffy fur that all wolves required during the winter. His eyes were a very dark brown, and looked like he felt; exhausted, but pleased with the day's events. He had cleared out another area with his sister today, meaning more places for the pack to access.. once it began. So far it was just him and his younger sister, Kipsu in his pack. Well, not including the newcomer who hadn't been introduced to Kipsu yet. Yawning widely, he grinned over at her, watching her lie peacefully.

Kipsu was different from Brasier. She was a lot lighter, fairer and of course had the feminine build. She already had most of her summer coat, which made her face and ears black, and the rest of her a dark brown. Different from Brasier in a lot of ways - his was darker, hers was just.. a mix of many browns. Kipsu herself was sensitive, quiet and somewhat shy. She never spoke much, but had creative ideas and was very intelligent. She also had a gift with potions and healing, which was why Brasier had given her the title of healer.

' The newcomer will come, '

Brasier said suddenly. Kipsu didn't look up, she just nodded and smiled. The first newcomer.. Brasier must be overjoyed, she thought to herself. Brasier didn't really let out his emotions well - he was just a big softie inside, really.

Xavier emerged from the trees that surrounded the meadows, and blinked slightly as warm sunlight rained elegantly onto his persona. It glinted on his paws and dazzled on his shoulders, caught under his cheekbones and created fire in his eyes....and it was warm, and the air was filled with peaceful uproar, the clear skies had in them not one cloud or tear of rain, and the grass was like stranded honey, rippling in sheets with the gnetle breeze that carassessed the tendrils of his silver mane.

He lifted his handsome visage a little higher as he spied Brasier and his smaller sister, whom he could not see properly, as she was basking. And he padded towards them gently, trying not the crunch the ground beneath his monsturous paws. He reached them, and stopped, a aware of the overlarge shadow he was casting on the ground.

"Hello Brasier...and..."

Both Brasier and Kipsu looked up as Xavier approached, Brasier grinned broadly and Kipsu observed him closely. A wanderer.. she thought curiously, and got to her paws. Brasier did so too.

' Kipsu, '

Kipsu stated. This must be Xavier.. she thought, remembering Brasier mentioning his name a while ago. She bowed low.

' We better give you a rank. What are you good at? '

Brasier asked, hoping Xavier wouldn't find them rude standing there, watching him closely. He must be unnerved.. poor guy, he thought. I wonder what a warrior like himself has been through..

Xavier broke into a true smile as they rose, and her returned Kipsu's bow respectfully, noting how low she sunk, wondering. Then he looked sideway at Brasier, and the white scar running from one side of his throat to the other flashed in the light. He bowed to his alpha, and hen addressed Kipsu.

"Greetings, Kipsu...You have a gallant brother. It is a pleasure to meet you."

He said dutifully, though he wasn't lying. Gallantry came in many forms, and Brasier seemed to be one of them. He shifted his weight. Then he looked to Braiser, and answered his question levelly.

"I am a better fighter than anything else. I could guard you both very well, but i am am just a stranger to you. How so, do you offer me a rank so eagerly?"

Brasier grinned but looked down bashfully as Xavier talked to Kipsu. As he asked of their interest in ranks, he tilted his head with confusion. Is this wolf not known to ranks? He must have owned a tighter pack, he thought. Indeed, at Copperdell he had wondered whether to give ranks as soon as he met the wolf, instead of getting to know them first.

' Well.. we tend to give ranks when we first meet the wolf, then go on from there. But you seem like a strong wolf, and I'm sure you would be a very skilful guardian. Perhaps the role of Lead Guardian? But not if you see that as too much, it is a well sought-after rank, '

He added. Indeed, even being just a guardian was an honour for any warrior. Kipsu looked at her brother, thinking. Wondering whether his idea was right, Brasier frowned as he thought.

Xavier listened closely to Brasier as he explained his insights into how the pack worked, and because every word could means something different. He was listening so closely it took a minute for him to register the fact that he was being offered a rank- lead gaurdian, and rank he had taken up once before. It was a rank that had given him many physical and mental scars and has pushed him into the utmost peril. But it was one he did well, he was unmatched on the battlefield and fought fairly and swiftly. He also had the mental capabilities to stay strong. Xavier was not a weak wolf and it showed.

Xavier smiled, and nodded.

"It would be an honour to be your Lead Guardian. Do you want ot hear about my work as a Main guardians in a previous pack?"

The brujo sat down and curled his tail around his legs.

Brasier grinned broadly as Xavier accepted the position. Wondering whether he had handled the conversation well so far, he hoped that he wouldn't think him a pushover for giving him a rank first time, and especially a rank like that. I hope we don't have any wars, but if we do get attacked.. we have a brilliant fighter on our side! he thought. As soon as he was about to speak, Kipsu raised her head and spoke before her brother.

' Please do, Sir Xavier, '

She commented. Again, she wasn't flattering him. A warrior deserves that title, was all she thought on the matter. Brasier was surprised, but quickly overcame this. His sister was always full of surprises - and he doubted she would ever change.

So instead, he looked back at the Lead Guardian and added his enthusiasm by nodding eagerly.

Xavier shifted himself into a more comfortable position, and the sun beat down upon his back greedily, soaking into his raidant coat. He looked up, squinted, and raised a brow nochalantly and the warmth fuzzed through to his toes. He smiled contentedly and looked between his alpha and his alpha's sister. So far they had shown him nought but respect, and he was going to tell them a story of his past, his terrible past, as an act of faith. Rolling his shoulders to displace the fur thats was prickling his neck, Xavier let his smile grow as he listened to them speak ,and his eyes twinkled.

"Very well,"

He concluded and gave asmal lhalf-laugh, his eyes drifting to the dirt.

" I recieved the role of Lead guardian two weeks after entering a mainstream pack with many members, though i was one of the first. It was....heaven, a previous life i cannot attain again, and i loved my family, so called, with all my heart. Especially My Alina."

He paused and frowned, eyes still downcast, strong brow now a mass of splintered lines. Finally, after a moment of silence, he looked up.

"I never thought i would have to ever put my skills to the test. I was four then, a lot younger, and i was fit and lithe, but not as i am now. I was sleeker and i was, in a word or two, not strong enough. When the rogue wolves moved into the woods next to our lands, i had to train, i have to make sure that if they time came i could defend the peopel i loved. I went through such a routine, and i emerged stronger than i thought i would. But my first battle with a rogue...i had fought many wolves before but ah, it was true agony. In the battle with the rougen leader, Vox, he was called, i obtained a scar which ran from noe side of my throat ot the other...i almost died. I was the lucky one. Vox was still as the night. He did not get up again. And...he wasn't the only one...Another wolf called Pyrgus reopened the wound...left me unable to speak until i healed."

Xavier fell silent and frowned thoughtfully. Then, coming to his senses, he looked up at Kipsu and Brasier.

Both Brasier and Kipsu looked thoroughly entranced by Xavier's little snippet of his life, and were watching him with wide eyes. Well, Kipsu's looked more empty and understanding but similiar. Brasier's jaw was slightly ajar and was hanging with what was unmistakably awe. Realising this, he hastily closed it, looking embarassed.

' Wow.. ' was all Brasier could utter. Getting to his paws, he flittered his tail before continuing. ' You must have braced many more hardships during your life - now I am even happier with my choice! '

He added, with a nervous laugh. True, the atmosphere was now so still and quiet that he could have sworn he heard a leaf fall. This guy is too good.. he could overpower us! he thought dramatically.

Meanwhile, Kipsu was having troubles of her own. She vaguely remembered Xavier mentioning the name 'Pyrgus'. Can't be him. Can't be. He would never hurt another.. but even the wound sounds similiar to his own. Revenge..? she thought, glancing at random places on the ground, not caring where as long as it wasn't at either her brother or Xavier. Pyrgus..

Brasier did of course know this particular character, or perhaps in Xavier's view - this particular fiend, but he didn't remember, of course. He was only thinking about how brave and determined Xavier must be. A powerful addition, nonetheless!

Xavier gave an almost uncomfortable smile and shook his glossy mane back from his visionaries. Still keeping them to the earth, the peircing gaze was filled with memories. Though he did not recal lexcatly how he had felt at the time, he would never forget the pain.

"Well, i shall serve you well...both of you..."

He glanced swiftly at Kipsu.

"Are you ok?"

Kipsu didn't answer, nor show any recognition of catching Xavier's words. Brasier was still dumbfounded, but quickly regained his senses and looked over at Kipsu. Unlike Xavier, however, he wasn't worried. It wasn't unlike Kipsu to act distant and far-a-way. It was all in the nature.. but despite this, her eyes did look emptier than usual, and she was swaying from side to side..

As reality hit back, Kipsu looked up sharply, her eyes meeting Xavier's. Narrowing them immediatly as she caught sight of a scar that he bore on his neck, one he had told them about. The same as his.. the EXACT same. What's going on? This can't be the same Pyrgus.. what about Opal, Shark? Topaz? Where had they been? she thought. She was thinking about her old travelling partners, ones that she had departed on a flight with to find a new pack. However, the small party split up, despite the fact that they were siblings. Well.. apart from Kipsu, of course. Brasier had not attended - this was all before she had met back up with her brother.

When she finally looked up at him the force of her glance was more like a physical blow than anything else. A real fire burned in her eyes and he could tell that she knew something significant- dregs of his past were being brought up again, and he did not like it at all. He swallowed, a gesture that could not be seen on the surface, and felt the scar ripple as his throat moved with the motions. He let out a low, slow breath and dragged his eyes away from her to look at the ever exuberent Brasier. Xavier nodded at him, noting his stature of awe and the was his jaw had hung open a little. He had this reaction a lot- wolvens on the road only had to look at him and they would gawp. But it meant something more, this respect, when it came from an alpha. Once he had done this, he looked warily over at Kipsu, rolling his heated shoulders.

"I don't know what I have said wrong, Miss. Would you tell me?"

He said gently, in a murmer so low it was hardly words at all. The sky above him was slowly becoming overcast and common grey clouds drifted in from the coastlines far, far away. The mood had change and Xavier blamed himself entirely, and he could feel the upset the past brought to him once again. Right now, though he knew he had to explain and apologise, he just wished he had kept his mouth shut. He would. He wouldn't talk. It was just to...to painful. He wanted to turn a shoulder to both of them and say "I don't want to talk about it..." but he had caused distress already.

Way to go, X.

As Xavier spoke again, Kipsu raised her head once more to view him. This isn't fair. Stop brooding. It can't be the same Pyrgus, so why does it matter? she thought. She bowed her head once again to show her apologies, and then stood up, looking determined. However, Brasier could tell there was sadness inside her.

' Forgive me, sir. I was confused by a name you mentioned, I believed I knew the wolf, '

She replied simply. Brasier frowned, and then it dawned on him. PYRGUS! Of course, it's him! I liked that guy.. so silent, yet he could say so much.. he thought. But wait.. it sounds like he ripped Xavier's throat out, can't be the same one, right..?

' I remember Pyrgus.. ' Brasier murmured. ' I can't believe he would do this! '

Kipsu looked up sharply at her brother. Something clicked in her head, and she realised her mistake. Memories rushed back to her, barking voices and screams and cries.. Xavier had brought these memories. A sudden yet strong urge to lash at out him waged inside her, but it quickly subsided as she realised that it hadn't been Xavier's fault. The quake happened, and now it was gone.

' It's not him.. ' she answered shortly. At Brasier's questioning gaze, she added swiftly; ' Because Pyrgus died a year ago.. '

He listened dutifully as she spoke, and nodded when she had finished. But when it came to her last sentence he looked away and frowned, thinking hard. It had been two years ago that he had obtained the injury- but pf course, it could always be coincidence. There could be two Prygus's.

He looked back, the glare of the sun bright in his eyes.

"it was two years ago when i was injured. But of cours,e there could be two wolves dubbed Prygus..."
